Gareth said, "Taken outside garage door, pointing towards tree at end of patio for a general "nightshot" to test camera, last of series of 3 pictures taken - rest deleted (oops) though did not show anything unusual. Also noted sense of something different, emptiness, cold (not physical), before picture being taken, and a presence of some kind in front of me at time, had a feelin the camera would show something as I plugged her in. Could not see anything through viewfinder bar flash of light mentioned earlier. Area situated on old runway used in WWII (UK)."

James Courtney and Michael Meehan, crew members of the S.S. Watertown, were cleaning a cargo tank of the oil tanker as it sailed toward the Panama Canal from New York City in December of 1924. Through a freak accident, the two men were overcome by gas fumes and killed. As was the custom of the time, the sailors were buried at sea off the Mexican coast on December 4.
But this was not the last the remaining crew members were to see of their unfortunate shipmates. The next day, before dusk, the first mate reported seeing the faces of the two men in the waves off the port side of the ship. They remained in the water for 10 seconds, then faded. For several days thereafter, the phantom-like faces of the sailors were clearly seen by other members of the crew in the water following the ship.

Top 10 Old-Timey Ghost Stories in Illinois

With all the recent popularity of haunted houses, paranormal investigation, and legend tripping, it is easy to forget that ghost stories have been told for as long as human beings have walked the earth. Here in Illinois, the love of a good ghost story was alive and well in the 1800s and early 1900s, and some of our best tales come from that bygone era. Which one will prove to be the most timeless?

10. James Nolan Lights

Bond County, IL
During the early 1880s, local residents gathered nightly around an abandoned farmhouse outside the small town of Pocahontas in order to catch a glimpse of strange lights that emanated from within. Some claimed to hear sounds and even see the ghost of a man leaving the house with the body of a headless woman cradled in his arms. One skeptical reporter blamed the lights on a prankster.

9. Gooseneck Ghost

Macomb, IL
The Gooseneck Ghost was the local name of a spook light that appeared along the railroad tracks just west of town in the early 1900s. It was first seen in January 1908 by a father and son who were driving a team of horses back home. The light startled their horses and they took off running. The local newspaper described the ghost as “a bright light” and noted its proclivity for chasing travelers in that area. Looking for the Gooseneck Ghost became quite a sport for Macomb area residents, and some even brought ice cream and picnicked as they watched for it. Eventually, it was discovered that the ghost was actually a hoax that involved a Japanese lantern attached to a kite, but the prankster was never caught.

8. Diamond Island Phantom

Hardin, IL
During the 1880s, dozens of eyewitnesses saw a strange fireball on an island in the Illinois River a short distance from the town of Hardin. Two boys first witnessed the fireball in 1885 while fishing on the shore across from the island. The bright light shot out of the trees and hovered along the riverbank, sending the boys fleeing for home. Over the next few years, many reputable people witnessed the phenomenon, but others remained skeptical. The skeptics decided to camp out on the island and prove the whole thing was a hoax. After a few hours, the orange fireball appeared and flew over their heads, ultimately landing in one of their boats where—they claimed—it transformed into an old man wearing overalls before it ultimately vanished. The phantom was never seen again.

7. Haunted Cabin

Pope County, IL
Titled “The Miser’s Gold” in Charles Neely’s collection of folktales from Southern Illinois, this story is nearly identical to the one told about the cabin near Kingston in Adams County. This story takes place “in the early days of Pope County” (c.1820s) and concerns a family from Kentucky who took shelter in a cabin near the Ohio River. The cabin had been owned by a wealthy elderly hermit who was murdered by thieves, and neighbors believed it was so haunted that no one could live there. The wife was a devout Christian, however, and was unafraid of the ghost. When the ghost appeared, she asked him what he wanted and he told her where to dig to find a pot of gold in the cellar. Sure enough, when her husband returned, the two dug where the ghost had indicated and discovered a small fortune.

6. Rock Creek Ghost

Rock Creek, IL
Rock Creek was one of the many early settlements in Southern Illinois. A very well-known legend among locals there concerned a ghost that appeared in three different forms, always around the same branch of Rock Creek near a church. In the first encounter, a sheriff and his deputy were riding their horses down the road when suddenly their horses were spooked by what they described as an old-fashioned carpet-bag, which rolled toward them. The two peace officers fired their pistols at it and it vanished. The ghost’s next incarnation was of a large shepherd dog that crossed the path of a group of boys who were coming home from church. One of them kicked at the dog, but his foot passed right through it as though it wasn’t even there. The phantom dog continued to be seen into the early 1900s. At night, travelers often heard something following them in the brush.

5. Old Chicago Water Tower’s “Hanged Man”

Chicago, IL
Constructed with limestone quarried in nearby Lemont in 1869, this unique water tower was the only structure in downtown Chicago to survive the Great Fire of 1871. Surprisingly, its resident ghost has nothing to do with the fire. In the evening, several visitors have seen lights and open windows at the top of the tower, but there are no offices up there that would explain the phenomenon. Another, older ghost story associated with the tower is that the shadow of a hanged man can be seen in the windows. This was a popular tale before 1900, but there have been no recent sightings.

4. Lady in Black

Colchester
Between 1898 and the first decades of the Twentieth Century, residents of the small mining town of Colchester were startled by the sudden appearance of a woman dressed in black. Her face was always covered with a black shawl. According to a local newspaper report, the first sighting took place at the corner of Hunn and Macomb streets by a woman who was walking home from church. The lady in black did not make a sound, but merely followed the woman for several blocks before disappearing into thin air. The apparition was also spotted in the nearby towns of Bushnell and Macomb. According to reports in the town of Bushnell, the lady was seen “robed in deepest mourning.” She appeared at all hours of the night and “in a noiseless manner.” On one occasion, citizens of Bushnell even pursued the phantom, but she disappeared after a few yards. The lady in black has not been seen for at least a generation.

3. Ghost of Marshal Welch

Jonesboro, IL
In 1863, Union army deserters ambushed and killed a provost marshal named Welch along Dug Hill Road. There are two versions of the story, one involving three deserters, the other involving a dozen or so. In the second version, Welch’s own friend betrayed him and led him into the ambush. Since then, his ghost has been seen along the road. Another legend concerns a man named Bill Smith, who reportedly witnessed a spectral wagon pass over his head. The wagon was typical ghoulish fare—pulled by a pair of black horses.

2. Phantom Steamboat

Lewistown, IL
Tales of phantom ships frequently grace the coasts of Florida and the Carolinas, but such things are not unheard of in Illinois. Until the advent of automobiles and air travel, riverboats were a primary mode of travel and a common sight on Illinois waterways. Fulton County is home to a phantom riverboat that makes its appearance whenever the waters of the Spoon River swell. The legend began in the late 1840s, when an inexperienced riverboat crew attempted to navigate the river during a flood. The sound of a whistle and the passengers singing “Sweet By and By” was the last the townsfolk ever heard of the vessel, until, that is, a few years later.
In 1853, during another flood, eyewitnesses heard the distinctive sound of a whistle blowing in the fog. They rushed to the river’s edge and saw the same boat that had vanished years before. This time, it was wrapped in an eerie glow, and four, gleaming white passengers stood on deck, singing “Sweet By and By.” Several men attempted to approach the steamboat with a skiff, but as they got closer, the air became icy and the fog was too dense to see where they were going. The phantom vessel disappeared into the night.

1. Headless Horseman of Lakey’s Creek

McLeansboro, IL
The headless horseman of Lakey’s Creek is quite possibly one of the oldest ghost stories in Illinois. Passed down as an oral tradition until John W. Allen put the story on paper in 1963, the mysterious man named Lakey, as well as his untimely end, has been immortalized in the folklore of Southern Illinois. Long before a concrete bridge spanned the shallow creek 1.5 miles east of McLeansboro, a frontiersman named Lakey attempted to erect his log cabin near a ford along the wagon trail to Mt. Vernon. One morning, a lone traveler stumbled upon Lakey’s body. Lakey’s head had been severed by his own axe, which was left at the scene.
According to legend, his murderer was never found. For decades after the murder, travelers reported being chased by a headless horseman that rode out of the woods along Lakey’s Creek. “Always the rider, on a large black horse, joined travelers approaching the stream from the east, and always on the downstream side,” John Allen wrote. “Each time and just before reaching the center of the creek, the mistlike figure would turn downstream and disappear.”

Besides having such famous people buried there as Karl Marx, Douglas Adams, and the parents of Charles Dickens, Highgate Cemetery has long been known for its ghosts, sinister activities, and other strangeness, including:

• The most famous spook in this cemetery is The Highgate Vampire, who is not really a vampire in the classic sense, but a phantom that is described as a 7-foot-tall, dark male figure with piercing, hypnotic eyes and wearing a long black coat and high top hat; he seems to vanish into thin air. There have been several dozen sightings and encounters since the late 1960s.
• A man whose car broke down near the cemetery came face to face with a ghoul with glowimg red eyes that peered at him through the graveyard's iron gates.
• The ghost of an insane old woman has been seen racing among the gravestones, her gray hair flowing behind her as she searches for her children, whom she allegedly murdered.
• A dark shrouded figure has been see standing stock still and staring into space. When it is approached, it vanishes then reappears a short distance away, still staring into the void.
• A businessman was terrified by a phantom that jumped over the fence and landed right in front of him. He described it as having pointed ears, glowing eyes, and large nose. This might have been the infamous Spring-Heeled Jack.
• The floating ghost of a nun has been seen passing over the graves.

This picture was taken in Manila, Philippines on a Nokia 7250 phone. Neither of the girls report any strange feeling or a presence at the time the picture was taken, but the fact that the picture has been taken with a digital camera makes the possibility of a double-exposure unlikely.

Whilst visiting family for a holiday in August of this year, we had planned my husband and I to do the ghost tours of Edinburgh. Having been and still am a most haunted fan and after seeing them conduct a ghost tour for a programme and a three night live show I wanted more than ever to see for myself.

Over the course of our six night stay we first went to Mary Kings Close, a place steeped in history of old dwellings which is now underneath the streets of the old part of Edinburgh where poor people used to live of up to 15 people a room. This place holds many a ghostly tale though I never saw anything myself.

We also took a trip to Edinburgh Dungeons where we were given an education tour which was both a little scary and comical. Well worth a visit.

We also went for a tour of the Blair street vaults run by a company called Meercat tours. This was very interesting you started off in the streets of old Edinburgh being told of the infamous body snatchers Burke and Hare and other stories of what it was like to live here many years ago along with ghost stories of what people have seen and felt and of the little boy who was sent down the tunnel along the royal mile which leads from the castle all the way down to Holyrood palace (which is where the queen stays whilst in Edinburgh) playing bagpipes who has never to this day been seen but people still claim to hear these pipes coming up from the ground.

It was the last night of our stay and we had booked up with Auldreekie tours to do the terror tour at 10.30pm on the 5th August 2008. Again the tour started in the street of old Edinburgh and was not to dissimilar to the other tour to start with, with some stories being repeated and some new ones. After a while we approached the Niddry street vaults and proceeded to enter. Firstly you are taken into a room which is like a mini museum where lots of real torture tools and equipment is on display with more information and stories of how it was used. We were barbaric years ago, frightening really.

Anyway after that we went into the start of the vaults which were like tunnels with rooms coming off them and was told of the ghost known as the watch man who several people have claimed to have seen and heard. We were taken to another vault were there is a stone circle, no one is meant to set foot within the circle for there is supposed to be an evil entity within it. Subsequently when most haunted were filming one of the crew was stood in the circle and sustained three big scratches were he needed a total of five stitches. The guide who was taking us around was actually there on that night and refuses to set foot inside of this circle.

Finally we were all stood outside of the most haunted vault there and told of the many things that have happened to people in this vault and there is supposed to be a poltergeist in there too. As the guide was talking I just lifted the camera above the head of the person stood in front of me and snapped the picture that you have seen not knowing what I had captured until I got back to the flat where I was staying.

Before we entered the guide told us to all switch off our cameras and phones as batteries are affected in this room, they have had many paranormal investigators in this room and have recorded really high levels of activity and phenomena. People have said to have felt sick in this room, passed out, there has been two episodes of people being levitated off of the floor and other such things. When I reached into my bag to switch off my mobile I noticed it had already turned itself off which I thought strange as I knew it had been on as I had used it to phone my daughter not long before. It also was fine later after we finished the tour with battery power ok. Strange!!!

When we continued into the vault he lined the men along one side and the women the other. My husband was actually stood in that very spot where I captured that image about two to three minutes later, although a skeptic he is intrigued by this picture as he knows that nobody was there when he was stood there.

As well as a poltergeist, many mediums have sensed children in that room, maybe this is a skeleton of a child!

When we left the vault five minutes later I wanted for some reason to take another photo, although not being allowed to inside of that vault I went and stood back where I had originally snapped the first one, just outside. When the guide was further up the tunnel and out of sight I tried to take another picture but my camera was going crazy. It kept switching itself off and on, off and on I even got these two younger lads that were stood near me to see what was going on. It was weird and so I was unable to get another picture although I expect the owner will be taking pictures of the vault from the same spot as he is gob smacked with the image I have captured and also being a skeptic quoted me the most convincing thing he has ever seen yet and wants futher investigations to take place. i.e. sending my photo off to be looked at.

I have to say I think I have captured a full manifestation of a ghost in skeletal form and it would be interesting if the psychics could have a look at the picture to see what they get from it. I feel very excited by this picture and having made my local newspaper here and web site it has struck up lots of comments and set many tongues wagging. What do you think is it a ghost or a trick of the light?
